Absolutely brilliant if you're interested in herbology, gardening, cooking or anything to do with plants! Not only is it highly informative of their uses, but it also provides plenty of other information: clear depictions, cultural, historical and spiritual links, references to how the plants are to be harvested, the folklore behind them, how to turn it into a usable product and the dosage。(For e。g。 tinctures, ointments, essential oil, tea leaves, salad, creams and more!) This is the kind of book I’ve been looking for in regards to herbs。 There is detailed instructions on how to make various medicinal concoctions。 There is an easy to use section for various ailments and the plants that could help。 It mentions studies to backup what these herbs do but it also references folk uses。

Brian Schuster

Excellent layout, well organized information with good graphics and easy-to-read use of textboxes。 It has detailed pages on 100 of the most important herbs as well smaller segments for many more herbs, and a table of herbal remedies for common ailments。DK Publishing once again does good work。

Elizabeth Gajdosik

Really just flipped through it。 Good for brief introductions。

With more than 550 plant descriptions as well as the way you can use them to improve your physical and mental wellbeing and a scientific appendix with the latest research being conducted on Herbal medicine, this is a great book。 I did not read it page by page, and I guess that's not the way you consume a read like this。 With more than 550 plant descriptions as well as the way you can use them to improve your physical and mental wellbeing and a scientific appendix with the latest research being conducted on Herbal medicine, this is a great book。 I did not read it page by page, and I guess that's not the way you consume a read like this。 。。。more

This one is a keeper。 It will take me a while to remember what green leaf pairs with what remedy。 Thank goodness for full colour photographs and easy coded instructions。 Nasturtium, is one such herb that detoxifies the blood, liver and kidneys。 Have you ever tried real mint tea? No not the kind that's packaged in sachets。 Crush real mint leaves and add hot water for a refreshing tea。 I guarantee you won't want to go back to the manufactured kind again。 Mint is good for indigestion or sore throat This one is a keeper。 It will take me a while to remember what green leaf pairs with what remedy。 Thank goodness for full colour photographs and easy coded instructions。 Nasturtium, is one such herb that detoxifies the blood, liver and kidneys。 Have you ever tried real mint tea? Really, this is 2。5 stars and all of them are for formatting--there are large, color photos and single pages for every "key" herb and additional photos for the others。 The book includes some short, basic instructions for how to create tinctures, creams, lotions, etc。 It has some interesting information on the history of herbal medicine, but again it is limited。 There is a short section on remedies, but other books would be needed for more in-depth formulas。 The largest failure for me is the comp Really, this is 2。5 stars and all of them are for formatting--there are large, color photos and single pages for every "key" herb and additional photos for the others。 The book includes some short, basic instructions for how to create tinctures, creams, lotions, etc。 It has some interesting information on the history of herbal medicine, but again it is limited。 There is a short section on remedies, but other books would be needed for more in-depth formulas。 The largest failure for me is the complete lack of sources for the claims made。 。。。more

A clear and concise go to book, on herbal medicine。 I understand that not every beneficial herb on the planet could be covered due to the size of the book, but felt thatthey mostly covered on Western and Asian herbal medicine。 Rooibos, Devil's Claw,African Potato are African medicinal plants that have been medicallyproven and were left out。 A clear and concise go to book, on herbal medicine。 I understand that not every beneficial herb on the planet could be covered due to the size of the book, but felt thatthey mostly covered on Western and Asian herbal medicine。 Rooibos, Devil's Claw,African Potato are African medicinal plants that have been medicallyproven and were left out。 。。。more

A fantastic all-in-one guide to herbs and herbal medicine。 If you were to have only one book on herbal medicine, this is the one to get。 It's authoritative, comprehensive, well laid out, lavishly illustrated, and clearly a labor of profound love on the part of the author and all those who worked on it。 I knew nothing about herbal medicine before I got this book; now I feel that I have a very solid introduction to it。 The book is jammed with information, but very invitingly and appealingly presen A fantastic all-in-one guide to herbs and herbal medicine。 If you were to have only one book on herbal medicine, this is the one to get。 It's authoritative, comprehensive, well laid out, lavishly illustrated, and clearly a labor of profound love on the part of the author and all those who worked on it。 I knew nothing about herbal medicine before I got this book; now I feel that I have a very solid introduction to it。 The book is jammed with information, but very invitingly and appealingly presented。 I read a lot of books, and few indeed would I rate as highly as this one。 I recommend it without any reservations。 。。。more

Excellent resource to keep on hand for quick reference。 Well-organized and easy to read。 I have yet to search for an herb that was not listed in this book。 Store next to your supplies for use when creating herbal remedies。

Clear and approachable information on many herbs and common fruits / vegetables。 Beautiful hand drawings and a light history of herbal medicine at the beginning to get you started。 A fantastic reference book to keep on hand, but fiercely heavy so not one to tote around for identification。 This is a book for the shelf next to your tinctures, salves and dried plant matter。

This, along with the The Alchemy of Herbs: Transform Everyday Ingredients into Foods & Remedies That Heal , are my first ever two books in the topic of herbs, its healing properties etc。This little book works well as a quick reference to look up a particular plant or to look for a specific illness (cold, menstrual cramps, headache etc。) and what plants are recommended with what results。Beautifully published with lot of photos and drawings。 This, along with the The Alchemy of Herbs: Transform Everyday Ingredients into Foods & Remedies That Heal , are my first ever two books in the topic of herbs, its healing properties etc。This little book works well as a quick reference to look up a particular plant or to look for a specific illness (cold, menstrual cramps, headache etc。) and what plants are recommended with what results。Beautifully published with lot of photos and drawings。 。。。more

One of the best herbals I've seen, it is better than 40 of the 45 herbals I've read thus far。 My biggest dislike is that only some herbs (I think the more popular ones) have actions broken out into their own section。 That being said, there is some really nice cautionary information and the constituents sections is quite useful。 It is possible that I was less knowledgeable/paying less attention to constituents when I read the other herbals, but I was able to use the information on constituents (e One of the best herbals I've seen, it is better than 40 of the 45 herbals I've read thus far。 My biggest dislike is that only some herbs (I think the more popular ones) have actions broken out into their own section。 That being said, there is some really nice cautionary information and the constituents sections is quite useful。 It is possible that I was less knowledgeable/paying less attention to constituents when I read the other herbals, but I was able to use the information on constituents (e。g。 containing coumarins or thujone) to understand why some herbs might be dangerous when used long term。 If I can get a good price on this I will buy it。 。。。more

I definitely want my own copy of this eventually。 It is laid out in a very handy way, including sections on the history and future of herbalism in the beginning, a guide to the medical terminology used throughout, and a thorough how-to section at the back, as well as useful glossaries and indices。 The herbs are divided into two alphabetical sections: the first is an in-depth encyclopedia of the most commonly used/accepted herbs; the second includes more obscure/exotic/dangerous herbs。 Very good I definitely want my own copy of this eventually。 It is laid out in a very handy way, including sections on the history and future of herbalism in the beginning, a guide to the medical terminology used throughout, and a thorough how-to section at the back, as well as useful glossaries and indices。 The herbs are divided into two alphabetical sections: the first is an in-depth encyclopedia of the most commonly used/accepted herbs; the second includes more obscure/exotic/dangerous herbs。 Very good guide。 。。。more
